first online travel website. Headquartered in the US, Expedia offers a
travel website for 15 countries. Using Expedia.com, users can book
airline tickets, vacation packages, car rentals, cruises, and a variety
of other activities. In 2006, Expedia earned a Webby Award in the area
of “Best in Travel Websites.” It also earned a Stevie Award for “Most
Innovative Company” from The American Business Association.
Expedia.com describes itself as a website that “delivers consumers
everything they need for researching, planning, and purchasing a whole
trip.”
Often seen as the leader in online
travel websites, Expedia.com offers user-friendly tools that are
clearly labeled. Their features are comprehensive and contribute to
the one-stop-shop experience prospective travelers have on this site.
With tools like a currency converter, weather reports, maps, passport
information and guides to airports, Expedia definitely covers all the
bases that any well-prepared traveler would need to cover. Their
homepage displays a window where you can search for flights, hotels,
cars, cruises, and activities. Unlike Orbitz and Travelocity, you
cannot book train tickets on Expedia.com; however, it offers a unique
tab entitled Business Travel that caters to professionals. For about
$5.00 per airline that is booked, this feature comes with corporate
travel services and a traveler arranger—a feature no other travel
website has. This tool is aimed to help personal assistants who may be
booking travel for busy executives. Furthermore, the visual world map
allows you to click on any part of the world to begin exploring. From
there you can refine your search to one of the 1,800 destinations they
advertise.
In 2008, Expedia reports they saved
customers $248 million by booking flights and hotels at the same time.
When it comes to advertising the best deals, Expedia sticks with the 24
hour rule. They vow that if you find a lower price for the same trip
within 24 hours, they will pay the difference and award you with a
